Annual Flowers for Fall Planting

In all areas except those that have the coldest winter (where the ground freezes), September is an ideal time to plant cool season annuals for fall, winter and early spring color. Even in cold winter areas, many of these frost-hardy plants will bloom long into fall. Annuals to plant this month include calendulas, forget-me-nots, larkspur, Iceland poppies, ornamental cabbage and kale, pansies, primroses, snapdragons, stock, and violas.

Before planting, prepare the soil well by working in a complete fertilizer and ample amounts of organic matter like compost. Fertilize young plants often, at least once a month. Cultivate to aerate the soil and kill weeds. To protect plants against insect pests like aphids and caterpillars, treat with Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Concentrate.
