Give Spring Plantings a Boost with Floating Row Covers

Floating row covers are like heating blankets for newly planted vegetable and flower seedlings, boosting growth and providing protection from frosts. Sold in rolls in nurseries, garden centers and mail order seed catalogs, floating row covers are designed to be draped over plantings and sealed along the edges with soil. Lightweight and permeable to water and light, the covers act like miniature greenhouses, trapping heat and promoting faster growth. They also prevent insects from reaching young plants.

Floating row covers can be used on cool season or warm season vegetables and young flower seedlings. Once daytime temperatures reach 70 to 80 degrees F. remove the covers to allow for ventilation and prevent plants from over-heating. Floating row covers should also be removed when plants like peppers begin blooming to allow for pollination by bees. Plants that have been grown under row covers can be tender and particularly attractive to insect pests. For control, use Bayer Advanced™ PowerForce® Multi-Insect Killer Concentrate.
