Spring Lawn Feeding Season

March begins spring lawn-feeding season. Proper fertilization helps provide the foundation for a thick, healthy turf that not only looks great but also is better able to resist insects, disease and weeds. The key to an effective fertilizer is having the right balance of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The slow and continuous release of nitrogen is especially important, because it helps build stronger root systems and also limits surge growth associated with some fertilizers.

Fertilizers feed at all levels to promote better soil, stronger roots and a deep-down green lawn that lasts. Here's how:

  • Soil: Fertilizers continuously release additional nutrients into the soil over time. This helps make the soil rich and fertile and establishes the foundation for strong roots and replenishes vital primary nutrients.
  • Roots: Roots are stronger and deeper, which means water and nutrients are transported more efficiently from the soil. Lawns with stronger root systems are better able to withstand heat and drought.
  • Grass: The visible result is greener, thicker grass, which enhances the appearance and durability of your lawn.

Basic Application

Make sure the spreader settings correspond with the amount of fertilizer you want to apply. All the information you need is on the back of the fertilizer bag. Never feed a dry lawn. Begin spreading the fertilizer at the edges of the lawn, then in between the edges, walking at your normal pace. Water thoroughly after fertilizing.
